Last month I wrote about the power of the Spirit that is within you. That topic always leads me back to a scripture in the Bible that many will be familiar with. It’s in Galatians 5:22 & 23. It’s where the Apostle Paul talks about the Fruit of the Spirit.
In that scripture it says according to the New English version, “the harvest of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, fidelity, gentleness, and self-control.” What does this mean in your life?
The natural inclination of that Spirit that is with you from conception to death is divine or godly. That Spirit naturally produces wonderful qualities such as love, joy, peace, goodness and gentleness. It is when we are most actively producing those qualities that we are the most connected to whatever we call God, and we feel the most bliss and harmony in our lives. Of course we would. We are operating in conjunction with the most powerful Spirit in the Universe. When we go with the natural flow of things, it’s like swimming downstream. It’s effortless.
However, have you noticed that it doesn’t always feel like you’re swimming
downstream? Sometimes I’m sure you feel like you are swimming upstream with a 100 pound anchor on your right foot! Sometimes you feel bad, wrong, overwhelmed and afraid. That definitely doesn’t feel like bliss, harmony, love, joy and peace! So what happens?
In my healing work, I have the ability to connect with my client’s body and their Spirit. What I have learned in working with hundreds of clients is that our body feels grossly under-appreciated, at times neglected and not nurtured nearly enough. It’s the feeling and oftentimes the words I hear as I tap into my client’s physical body. I constantly encourage my clients and today I admonish you to love your physical body. So your thighs are bigger than you want. Celebrate them! So your breasts are smaller than you want. Love them! So your teeth aren’t as perfect as you would like.
Acknowledge them!
Imagine getting up every morning and thanking your heart for beating all night while you slept. Consider waking up and being in a place of gratitude for all of your organs that repaired themselves quietly while you rested. I ask you to look at yourself naked in the mirror before you jump into the shower in the morning and love the part you have hated the most. Doing this will help diminish the feelings of negativity as your body will literally change the emotions which are affecting you daily.
I liken the flow of Spirit in our life to a water tap with a hose attached. The water tap can be turned on full force but if the hose attached to it is knotted or kinked, the water doesn’t flow through, plain and simple. The kinks or knots in our hose are the emotions of not being good enough, being bad or unforgivable, worry, concern, anxiety, hate, fear, sadness and anger. They are powerful kinks in the hose of our life. Remove the kinks and Spirit can flow more fully and powerfully in your life. I’m sure you would agree that this is a desired result in your life – so how can you begin?
What I hear from Spirit consistently is that it wants more joy. In my research I learned that there are 15 different Hebrew words and 8 Greek words to describe joy which is used both as a noun and as a verb. That would indicate to me that joy is both a cause and an effect. One dictionary defined joy this way: “A feeling of delight so deep and so lasting that one radiates happiness and expresses it spontaneously”.
How can you have more joy in your life? Joy is a result of play, fun, and laughter. How much are you playing and laughing in your life? My partner and I play the board game Parcheesi when we are together. We have a very friendly competition going and I have been known to roll around my living room floor more than once holding my stomach in laughter. When was the last time you really laughed – I mean breathgasping, stomach-hurting, good old snorting laughter? Maybe it’s time.
Joy is also a result of pure gratitude and appreciation. How much complaining do you engage in daily? You may want to get one of those “No Complaint” bracelets that many are using to increase their awareness of how much bitching and complaining they actually do. We complain a lot as those who are using the No Complaint bracelet are realizing. Start countering the complaining with mountains of gratitude and appreciation. For every complaint, can you come up with five things for which you are grateful? That will put you into a place of joy that will open up the flow of Spirit.
Lastly, know that you are good. We have been told by parents, teachers,
employers, and religious authorities far too many times that we are wrong, bad, stupid, sinners, undeserving, not good enough, imperfect, forgetful, unforgivable, and not okay. Believe in the very core of your being, the very essence of who you are that you are good. You are a child of this Universe. You are amazing. You are brilliant. You are deserving of all good things.
As I live on the edge of a forest, I watch birds all day long. Some are pretty humble looking. Others are magnificent in their foliage. A few are downright dramatic. Some are little like the hummingbird. One particular bird is so big that it practically darkens my window when it flies by. Yet I know that not one of those birds sits down on their perch at the end of the day and thinks, “I’m not an elephant. I’m not a tiger. I’m not a giraffe. What good am I?” They start and end their day singing.
Could we follow their example? Could you end your day in praise and gratitude and start your day in thanks and appreciation?
I promise you that your JOY quotient will skyrocket which will in turn open up your Spirit to a greater flow of power, goodness and abundance. Meditate on the Fruit of the Spirit – the Spirit that operates in you with every breath you take and embrace the sweetness of who you are. Notice that the Bible called it the Fruit, not the Meat nor the Vegetable of the Spirit, but rather the juicy, succulent, delicious sweetness of Fruit.
Love, joy, peace, goodness, kindness, patience, fidelity, gentleness and selfcontrol are the very essence of the Divine within you.
Celebrate today who you truly are.
