Are you having fun in your business? Do you believe that you can have fun? I firmly believe that one of the greatest reasons for the success in my business is that I have fun. I love what I do and it shows. What about you? When was the last time you laughed with a client?
In my coaching practice, I realize that many people are not having fun in their business. They are stressed out, overwhelmed and very serious about the day to day responsibility of being an entrepreneur. Those are not great qualities for a successful business. So let’s help you get more laughter and fun into your business today.
Do you love what you do? That is a good place to start. If you don’t, then why are you doing it? If it is simply to earn money, then I highly suggest that you find what you really want to do and get moving in that direction.
What is your biggest stress? If it is money, then ask yourself why you aren’t making any money in your business. If it’s because you don’t have enough business, then keep on asking yourself why you don’t until you get to the bottom of the problem. You may want to work with a trusted friend or coach on this question. Money is important to your health and fun quotient. Value its significance in the success of your business.
If you have any feelings of overwhelm, then ask yourself: Why am I
overwhelmed? Identify what is creating your overwhelm.
I have a litmus test that I use. As I live in a place of peace and harmony on a regular basis, the minute I feel any stress, I will stop and ask myself: Who or what is causing the stress? Believe it or not, sometimes, it’s me! I’m the culprit for causing the stress. I’m the guilty party! What do I mean?
Let’s say that I identify the stress is coming from a deadline that I have set. I would love to have the project launch on the 1st of December but here it is the 15th of November and things are behind due to a number of different circumstances. The question I ask myself then is: Do I need to launch on the 1st of December? I chose the date – can I choose a different date? Very possibly. Eliminate the stress. This can apply in many ways so don’t brush this off as unreasonable because it really works. Many times our stress can be changed with one simple modification to how we are thinking.
If someone else is causing the stress, decide your options. You can approach the person and let them know how their conduct is affecting you. For example, in my network marketing group, my upline was used to rushing at the end of the month for quotas. That to me is unnecessary stress. It’s not like people don’t know their obligations at the beginning of the month. So I explained that as I didn’t have to meet any quotas at my level, I was averse to handling frantic emails, harried phone calls which produced a tremendous amount of stress. They agreed and the conduct that was causing me stress stopped. It took one email and my setting boundaries.
If that person or group of people continue to create stress and are disrespectful of your wishes for better communication or a different approach to deadlines, then decide if you need to work with them. Personally I am very particular about who I work with on my team and they understand my policies and boundaries very clearly. Consequently, it is now easy to operate within those boundaries, but I have set it up
that way. You can do the same.
Why else aren’t you having fun? Do you think it’s wrong to laugh or joke or smile with your clients? Is there an underlying belief that you won’t be taken seriously if you are having fun?
When I ask my clients why they work with me, one of the reasons is that they get great results but inevitably they state somewhere in their list of reasons that they have fun.
People want to have fun and they are looking for places to have fun. Why can’t your business be one of the places to have fun? It’s why I called my pole dancing company I started in 2004, A Pole Lot of FUN. I thought women wanted to pole dance because of the self-esteem and confidence issues or even because of the great exercise benefits but survey after survey after survey told us that they wanted to have fun! It worked. Trust me. People like to have fun and they need more of it in their life. You provide fun and they will come in droves to your business!
Besides, I look at it this way. I want to have fun. It’s one of my top three
values. Therefore, if I have fun in my business, then I attract people who like to have fun too. I’ve worked with a few clients in the past that were anything but fun and were actually a huge pain in the butt. They were negative and whiny people that made my job miserable and challenging. Not the least bit fun and I couldn’t wait to get them out of my life and business. You may have a few of those in your life that I highly recommend moving out of close proximity to you. You will immediately feel a shift in energy and have more fun and laughter in your life.
If fun is a priority in your life, then look at any and all areas where you are not having fun. Ask yourself these questions and be willing to make some critical changes to your fun and happiness quotient. Joy is an important part of any successful entrepreneur’s life. So go have fun and see what a difference in makes in your business!
