Is it possible to be right in the middle of a seven car pile-up and be the only car not hit? It would seem almost miraculous and yet that’s precisely what happened to my dear friend Monique and I a couple of weeks ago.
Traffic was particularly busy for a Sunday night and Monique and I were busy chatting away as we crossed one of the bridges on the way home. All of a sudden, she grabbled my arm and said, “relax your back.” Almost immediately we heard the crunch as four cars ahead of us hit each other and then two behind us. We were car number five and incredibly, we weren’t hit from either end.
So why were we so fortunate? Was it good luck? Is it because Monique has a cross hanging from her rear-view mirror? Were our stars in perfect alignment that night? Were our guardian angels actively protecting us? Does it mean that the people in front of us and behind us who were affected by the accident were any less deserving of protection? I don’t know the answers but I do know that we drove away from the accident with tremendous gratitude for our safety. It’s probably one of the greatest dilemmas on the planet today. Why do bad things happen to good people? Do we really create every little detail in our life? What determines the outcome of our day – fate, karma, our thoughts, our intentions, God, the Devil or is it all pretty much a crapshoot?
I do believe we create our life. I also know from my healing work that many things impact our life – our emotions, our past lives, our soul’s assignment for this lifetime and a myriad of other factors. I also know that I could go crazy worrying about every single thought I think since most of them are subconscious and I could worry about a wicked angel out to get me from the moment I wake up to the moment I go to bed. I personally choose not to go there.
What I have chosen to do is to be very clear in my intention that I wish to get what I need to get, do what I need to do, be what I need to be in the GENTLEST way possible. Some of my clients will practically go out of their way to make life difficult and challenging. They will use phrases like, “I need to be hit over the head to get a point”, or “No pain, no gain.” Or they will say things like, “If it’s not difficult, it can’t be worthwhile.” When I suggest easy, gentle, loving and supportive, they sometimes react as if I was speaking Greek.
What about you? Are words like easy, gentle and loving part of your daily thought processes?
Why are we so convinced that life needs to be hard, difficult, challenging and a struggle? It doesn’t need to be. Perhaps it comes so automatically because many of us were raised by parents that went through a war and/or depression. Many of us have in our background cultures such as Irish and Scottish or Eastern European where a strong work ethic and a philosophy for life that something bad will happen is a strong genetic coding. I suppose if I had lived through a famine, drought, war, plagues and economic hardships were a way of life, I would maybe expect the worst too. But for the most part, we live in a pretty cushy world. We have access to unlimited wealth like never before. We have access to incredible amounts of knowledge that is vast and free. Many of our freedoms would have been unheard of 100 years ago. Life can be easy, gentle and loving.
So how do you get from a life that is challenging and stressful to one that is easy, gentle and loving?
My conversation with the Universe went something like this: “God, I am a really good listener so you can be very gentle with me and I will listen. I will hear you whisper in my ear and I will follow your instructions. If you need to nudge me a little louder, that’s okay too, but please start off very gently and go from there. I promise to do my part and listen for your gentle nudging so you don’t have to hit me over the head with your instructions. Thank you for being easy, gentle and loving with me.”
Since having that conversation some time ago, it is amazing how much easier life has got. I have kept my promise and I do listen and I do obey the instructions. I have done some pretty outrageous things according to many people. Things like being told to go to Africa and 32 days later being on a plane to South Africa. Or the night I was given a complete business blueprint for a pole dancing business and although I had never pole danced, I followed the instructions to the letter. And this month, I’ve listened in selling all of my belongings and I’m leaving for a sabbatical that is starting in Mexico on January 1.
Although I still marvel at the fact that Monique and I were so beautifully protected on the bridge that night, on the other hand I am not the least bit surprised that we came out of it unscathed. Having a car accident, dealing with insurance companies, and suffering from whiplash are neither easy, gentle or loving. Both Monique and I are very clear that we deserve and have a life that is peaceful, stress-free and very blissful. Perhaps that’s why we were protected. I don’t know. What I do know that expecting easy, gentle and loving has produced a life that is miles away from the challenges, problems and strife that I once experienced very consistently.
Check into your own beliefs and see what you expect because it’s probably what you’re getting. I encourage you to make 2008 a year when easy, gentle and loving is a way of life for you and all those around you.
Wishing you the most amazing year ever,
Until next month as I write to you from sunny Mexico,
Blessings,
