If you watch the news, read the newspaper and listen to many of the experts, the economy is in the toilet and we are in for a rough ride. The future is gloomy and depressing.
On the other hand, a few weeks ago, I received an email from Bill Bartmann, the man who wrote the Foreword to my first book, Devil with a Briefcase, and he said, “In the last recession, I made a billion dollars.” Do you think Bill is excited about this current economy? You bet! As a matter of fact, in listening to Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad, in an interview, he predicted this would happen, took steps to prepare for it and is optimistic about his financial future.
So what about you? Are you feeling scared, nervous, or overwhelmed? Are you hoping that your business will slide through with few casualties? Are you praying that you just don’t get hit “too hard”?
If the word optimistic about the future is not in your current vocabulary, then this is really important. Historians will tell you that money is made every day, every year, every decade, and every century. Period. The only question is, “who will make that money, because somebody will and that somebody can be YOU!
Now you may have to become more creative or more innovative in your
marketing approach but remember, somebody in the world is going to make
money today. Guaranteed.
What can you do? One thing is to address the issue right up front.
What about marketing something along the lines of: Worried about the
economy? Tightening your belt? Cutting corners? In tough times, the
natural tendency is to pull back, reduce advertising and spend less on developing yourself and your business. However, people who actually MAKE money during a recession do exactly the opposite. While everyone else is withdrawing from the marketplace in fear, they step out more boldly and take center stage. Rather than hide and wait for the worst to pass over, successful people are more aggressively marketing their products and services. At the end of the recession, will you be one of the successful businesses that actually increased sales or will you be counting the casualties? If you want to be one of the successful businesses, let me show you how.
And then you can market your product, service, network marketing company or workshop.
I recently spoke at the Women of Worth event in Vancouver to approximately 800 women. Christine Awram, the organizer, said that the hotel was getting a tremendous number of cancellations of events for the next year. Conventions being cancelled, workshops and events being postponed were a daily occurrence. Yet Christine had 800 women show up, pay over $100 for the day and had a very successful event. I released my new book and did almost $5,000 in sales. Mmmm, that doesn’t sound like a complete failure to me.
With so many events and workshops being postponed or cancelled, what kind of success could the person enjoy who puts on an event and markets it well? Rather than competing with a ton of other events, is it possible that they could be even more successful if they are one of just a few events? I would think so. All of sudden, most of the competition is in hiding and you can step out boldly and take center stage. How exciting!
I could have postponed publishing my book, Christine could have cancelled her event and every store could shut its doors. But people will still buy, even during tougher times. They will still want entertainment, information and resources. As a matter of fact, I believe that even more people will have woken up to the fact that their JOB is not the answer and they need to be looking for multiple streams of income. They will be looking for network marketing companies, coaching, books on personal and business development, workshops for solopreneurs, websites, marketing, brochures and business cards.
I guarantee that people who make money during the next five to ten years will be the ones who continue with their confidence intact and their marketing in place. Yes, shifts may have to be made. You may need to offer more lower priced, entry points to your business. Rather than have people commit to a $500 bill for four coaching sessions, perhaps you will offer a $75 introduction to your coaching and spend 45 minutes with a person instead of one hour. Start thinking about what you can do to make getting to know you and your business affordable and inviting.
It’s also why I love the internet. Most of what I can do on the internet to market my business doesn’t cost a lot of money and much of it is free. With millions of new users coming onto the internet looking for leadership and guidance, your positioning is critical. Be seen as the “expert” and watch people want what you have.
I may not be able to say that I made a billion dollars during the recession at the end of it, but I am absolutely confident that I will say I made money during the recession. What about you?
