Yesterday my internet went down and the Mexican internet company tells me it could be days before it is up again! Just when I had a list a mile long to do before I left for Vancouver this afternoon, a monkey wrench got thrown into the mix.
It definitely forced me to look at the priorities before I leave. I thought that all sorts of things needed to get done before my flight today Not true at all. Much of what I thought was urgent now isn´t.
People will often say to me, “but I have to live here or I have to have this or that.” And in the moment you may think that is true. But it´s not. I would have told you two years ago that I had to have a bathtub. I loved my nightly baths. I haven´t had a bathtub since leaving Canada. I´ve survived without and now don´t even think of having a bath, even when I have had access to one.
There is really very little we need. There is a lot we think we need. It´s one of the perks of living abroad. You get clear on what is an essential and what is a luxury. Most of what we think are essentials are actually luxuries. A typical Mexican person walks into my place and thinks they´ve died and gone to heaven. It´s nothing like where they live. Yet they have raised their families, birthed their babies, celebrated and mourned in their humble homes. It´s actually quite remarkable to walk past a Mexican home and see how many people fit into such a small space. We´d never think of living that close to other people, even family members. To people all over the world, it´s normal.
So last night, instead of fretting over the emails not answered, the broadcast not sent out and the unfinished work, Greg and I got dressed up and went out for a fabulous dinner. I could have come down to the community center and used the internet here as I am this morning. However, I decided that two years from now, I won´t remember that my emails sat in my inbox for more than 24 hours (horrors!) or that I was a day late in getting out my newsletter. However, the memories of having a wonderful dinner with Greg would be remembered. And the lobster bisque pumpkin puree soup with shrimp was amazing!
Every day, as I create the life I want, it is all about priorities. Losing my internet connection simply reminded me yet again of that.
