At the Chili Cook Out on Saturday night that raised $2,300 for charity here in Mexico, many of the booths were manned by foreigners who now make this area their home on a permanent basis. They have moved out of their comfort zone to live in a new country with different customs, language and culture.
It isn´t always easy to adapt, but the ones that I have met love their love and it shows. The booth next to us was doing a Hawaiian theme on their chili and one of the men was in full Hawaiian regalia. He was undoubtedly out of his comfort zone wearing a grass skirt and a stuffed bra top. Yet he was willing to do it for the cause.
What about you? How easy is it for you to move out of your comfort zone? You don´t have to do anything this wild (although wait until you see Wednesday´s post) but you probably could do something that would shift your perspective, move your boundaries outwards and create an even more amazing life for yourself.
So why don´t we do things out of our comfort zone? Usually because we are afraid of the consequences. Fear of what others will think, what bad thing could happen or taking on more responsibility are some of the reasons we stay stuck where we are. What I am noticing as I am constantly moving out of my comfort zones is that lots of good things happen as a result. It´s how I have created my life that rocks!
The other thing that stops us is that there isn´t a big enough WHY to move out of the comfort zone. This fellow had a reason to put on a skirt and make-up – kids living off of garbage at the dump, unable to break a cycle of poverty without a hand up. You need a big enough WHY in your life.
Try one thing today that is out of your comfort zone. Eat a new food, stop and do nothing for 15 minutes, go for a walk in the middle of the day, wear a new combination of clothes or phone somebody you´re upset with and apologize. I don´t know what that one thing is but I know that you can easily find something out of your comfort zone to do today IF you really want to.
